Manuel and his granddaughter
You can change a life in 10 minutes!
Manuel is a farmer in Ixcán, Guatemala, a war survivor, and a former refugee – and a loving father and grandfather. He is one of the most serene, wise, and kindhearted people I know. A community leader, he participated in the movement to bring former Guatemalan dictators to trial for genocide.
Manuel loves the Christmas season – eating tamales, picking fresh oranges for visitors, listening to carols, and joining in processions around his village. But one Christmas he was worried instead of joyful. He was losing his sight – and losing sleep, fretting over how he could provide for his family if he went blind.
But he didn’t lose hope. Several people he knew with eye problems had benefited from services provided by Enfoque Ixcán. Accessing eye care for the first time in his life at age 72, Manuel learned that he had cataracts and was eligible for free surgery. Eager for the chance at better vision, Manuel had operations on first one eye, then the other a month later. Thanks to Enfoque Ixcán, Manuel now sees clearly again!
Cataract surgery takes just 10 minutes, but impacts a life forever. In just 10 minutes, Manuel’s vision was restored, along with his ability to enjoy life to the fullest!

Manuel in a Cacao Tree
Today Manuel is back to growing corn and cacao, milking his cows and pruning his orange trees. He once again watches soccer matches and engages in community events. This year, Manuel is looking forward to a bright Christmas.
Manuel’s life changed in just 10 minutes, thanks to generous supporters like you who made his surgery possible. Many other people in the remote Ixcán region hope to improve their failing eyesight as well. Will you make a tax-deductible donation today to help people like Manuel see their world again? A cataract surgery costs $125, but truly, any amount helps.
The holidays we celebrate this season – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the Solstice, and New Year’s – celebrate light and life and renewal. I invite you today to help others once again see the light around them and renew their joy in life. Please join us at Enfoque Ixcán in providing the gift of sight.
